Azure Certification Roadmap 2027

🚨 Why a 2027 Roadmap Already?

Because the 2026 map you studied in January is already out of date. Between February and June 2026, Microsoft launched its largest certification expansion ever and scheduled a wave of retirements to match. The theme is simple: every role is being redefined around AI, and the certification portfolio now reflects that.

Here is the short version of what changed:

And the brand-new certifications with no predecessor:

• AB-620 AI Agent Builder Associate (Copilot Studio agents)
• AI-500 Multi-Agent AI Solutions Expert (beta July 2026, GA September 2026)
• AB-100 Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect (Expert)
• DP-750 Azure Databricks Data Engineer Associate
• DP-800 SQL AI Developer Associate
• GH-600 GitHub Certified Agentic AI Developer (GA July 2026)

☕ My take: Don't panic. The infrastructure core that gets people hired, AZ-104, AZ-305, AZ-700, did not change at all. What Microsoft did is retire the exams where AI went from elective to essential, and add a new family for agent builders. Your foundation is safe. Your specialization options just multiplied. 🗺️ How to Use This Roadmap

Same rules as always. Azure certifications are organized in tracks, and your job is to pick the track that matches where you want to go, not to collect them all.

Certifications get you interviews. Hands-on skills get you the job. Every exam below should come with something you actually built.

Every certification follows this pattern:

🏁 The Foundation, 2027 Edition

Fundamentals exams are unchanged in spirit, but the AI one has a new exam number.

AZ-900: Microsoft Azure Fundamentals

☕ My take: Still the right starting point if you're brand new to cloud. Still skippable if you already work in Azure daily.

AI-901: Azure AI Fundamentals (replaces the AI-900 exam)

☕ My take: The certification name stays "Azure AI Fundamentals", only the exam number changed, and the content got a generative-AI and agents refresh. In 2027 I'd rank this second only to AZ-900 as a starting exam. AI vocabulary is now assumed in every cloud interview I see.

SC-900: Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals

☕ My take: Still underrated, still unchanged. Zero Trust, Conditional Access, and Entra ID come up in every Azure project. 1-2 weeks well spent.

DP-900: Azure Data Fundamentals

☕ My take: Only if you're heading down the data track. Otherwise skip it and put the time into AZ-104.

1️⃣ Track 1: Azure Administrator (the stable core)

Still the most popular starting track, and untouched by the shakeup. This is where most cloud careers begin and where the most job openings are.

AZ-104: Microsoft Azure Administrator

☕ My take: This is still THE certification, and the shakeup makes it more valuable, not less. While every specialization pivots to AI, someone still has to run the infrastructure those AI workloads sit on. If you only get one Azure cert in 2027, it's this one.

AZ-802: Windows Server Administrator (replaces AZ-800 + AZ-801)

☕ My take: Microsoft collapsed two exams into one, which honestly is what that track always should have been. If you run hybrid Windows Server estates, wait for AZ-802 rather than racing to finish the old pair.

🔀 Where AZ-104 Leads in 2027

• → AZ-305 (Architect) if you want to design solutions
• → SC-500 (Security) if you want to secure them, this arrow used to say AZ-500
• → AZ-700 (Network) if networking is your thing
• → AI-200 or AI-103 if you want to build on the AI wave
• → AZ-140 (Virtual Desktop) if you're into end-user computing

2️⃣ Track 2: Security Engineer 🛡️ (AZ-500 becomes SC-500)

Security stays one of the highest-paying tracks, and it's the track with the most consequential change.

SC-500: Cloud and AI Security Engineer

☕ My take: The rename tells you everything: "Cloud and AI Security Engineer." Securing AI workloads, prompt injection surfaces, data boundaries for RAG apps, and AI service identity is now part of the security engineer's job description, and the exam followed. If you're starting security study today, start with SC-500 and skip AZ-500 entirely.

SC-300: Identity and Access Administrator

☕ My take: Unchanged and still excellent. Conditional Access, PIM, Entra ID governance. Pairs with SC-500 the way it paired with AZ-500. Identity remains the most chronically undersupplied skill I see in the market.

3️⃣ Track 3: Developer 💻 (AZ-204 becomes AI-200)

For people who write code and build cloud-native applications. This track got the most philosophical rewrite.

AI-200: Azure AI Cloud Developer

☕ My take: Read the skills list carefully: containers, messaging, data services, monitoring. This IS AZ-204, but with vector databases and AI service integration promoted from side topics to core, and Python as the primary language. If you're a developer on Azure, this is your new default cert. The apps you build in 2027 will have an AI component whether you planned it or not, and Microsoft just made the cert admit it.

AZ-400: DevOps Engineer Expert

☕ My take: Unchanged and still expert-level weight on a resume. The prerequisite path shifts with AZ-204's retirement, so plan on AZ-104 as your base. If you live in GitHub Actions or Azure Pipelines, this is still your flag.

4️⃣ Track 4: Solutions Architect 🏛️ (the stability island)

AZ-305: Azure Solutions Architect Expert

☕ My take: Completely untouched by the shakeup, and that's the lesson. Design judgment ages slower than any product knowledge. My advice hasn't changed either: get at least a year of real Azure work after AZ-104 before you attempt this. It's a decision-making exam, not a configuration exam. People fail it by studying it like a technical manual.

5️⃣ Track 5: AI Engineer 🤖 (AI-102 becomes AI-103)

The AI track didn't just get renamed, it got re-centered on agents and generative AI.

AI-103: Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer

☕ My take: The heart of this exam is RAG done properly: index design, hybrid search, semantic ranking, chunking strategy, plus building agents in Microsoft Foundry (the platform formerly called Azure AI Foundry). If you held AI-102, you know maybe 60% of this exam. The agentic third is genuinely new material, and it's the most employable third.

AI-300: Machine Learning Operations Engineer (replaces DP-100)

☕ My take: Microsoft retiring "Data Scientist" and replacing it with "MLOps Engineer" is the most honest rename in the whole shakeup. Companies stopped hiring notebook-only data scientists years ago. Deploying, monitoring, and operating models is the job, and now it's the cert.

6️⃣ Track 6: The Agent Builder Track 🤝 (new for 2027)

This track did not exist a year ago. It's Microsoft's biggest bet, and going into 2027 it's the least crowded lane on this whole map.

AB-620: AI Agent Builder Associate

☕ My take: The accessible entry into the agent world. It's Copilot Studio centered, so it favors builders over hardcore coders, but the integration domain is real engineering: MCP servers, Agent2Agent protocol, custom connectors. If your company is rolling out Copilot agents (most are trying to), this cert makes you the person in the room who actually knows how they work.

AI-500: Multi-Agent AI Solutions Expert

☕ My take: An Expert-level cert for orchestrating multi-agent systems. It's brand new, so study materials are thin right now. Watch this one through late 2026 and consider it your 2027 stretch goal if you're deep in the AI track. Being early to an Expert cert is a differentiator; nobody else on the resume pile has it either.

AB-100: Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect

☕ My take: The business-architecture counterpart, spanning Copilot Studio, Foundry, and enterprise agent deployment patterns. Requires an active Associate-level Microsoft certification first. Right for consultants and solution architects who design agent rollouts rather than code them.

GH-600: GitHub Certified Agentic AI Developer

☕ My take: GA in July 2026. If your workflow is GitHub Copilot, agent-driven development, and CI/CD, this is the developer-experience angle on the same wave. Niche today, but GitHub certs travel well across employers.

7️⃣ Track 7: Data Engineer 📊 (the post-Fabric world)

The data track already had its shakeup in 2025 when DP-203 retired. 2026 added two new options.

DP-700: Fabric Data Engineer Associate

☕ My take: The DP-203 successor and the default data engineering cert. Fair warning from the trenches: this is Fabric, not classic Azure Synapse and Data Factory. Former DP-203 holders need to actually study the new platform, not just refresh.

DP-750: Azure Databricks Data Engineer Associate (new)

☕ My take: Microsoft shipping an official Databricks cert tells you how much enterprise data work runs on Databricks. If your shop is Databricks-first, this beats DP-700 for relevance.

DP-800: SQL AI Developer Associate (new)

☕ My take: SQL plus AI workloads (vector search in SQL, AI-assisted database development). Early days, but a smart pick for database developers who want an AI-flavored credential without leaving their lane.

DP-600 and DP-300

☕ My take: DP-600 (Fabric Analytics Engineer) remains the analytics-side sibling of DP-700. DP-300 (Azure Database Administrator) is still alive and still the right cert for SQL DBAs managing Azure SQL estates.

🔧 Specialty Certifications (unchanged)

AZ-700: Azure Network Engineer Associate 🌐

☕ My take: Untouched by the shakeup and still a differentiator. VNets, ExpressRoute, Azure Firewall, Private Endpoints. Every AI workload everyone is suddenly building still needs private networking, which quietly makes this cert more valuable in 2027, not less.

AZ-140: Azure Virtual Desktop Specialty 🖥️

☕ My take: Still my soft spot, still unchanged. If your organization runs AVD, this makes you the go-to expert. I've deployed AVD for multiple enterprises and the demand for specialists hasn't slowed.

⏰ The Deadline Table: Grab It or Skip It

For every retiring exam, the same question: race to take it, or start fresh on the replacement?

The rule behind every row: a cert you earn before retirement stays valid and renewable. But an exam number nobody can take anymore signals "certified in the old world" on a 2027 resume. When in doubt, certify forward.

🎯 What Employers Actually Look For in 2027

The uncomfortable truth hasn't changed: employers care about certifications less than you think and skills more than you expect. What HAS changed is which skills.

Certifications open doors. Hands-on experience walks through them. That formula survived the shakeup untouched.

🧭 My Recommended Path (Starting from Zero, Mid-2026 into 2027)

If you told me today "Parveen, no certs, no cloud experience, I want to be hired in 2027," here's exactly what I'd say:

Step 1: 🟢 AZ-900, build the vocabulary (2-4 weeks)

Step 2: 🟢 AI-901, build the AI vocabulary the market now assumes (1-2 weeks)

Step 3: 🔵 AZ-104, the real one (6-10 weeks)

Step 4: 🏗️ Build 2-3 real projects, see my portfolio projects field note, and make at least one of them include an AI service

Step 5: 🎯 Specialize based on what you enjoyed:

• 🛡️ Loved locking things down? → SC-500
• 🤖 Loved the AI project? → AI-103
• 🤝 Loved wiring agents together? → AB-620
• ⚙️ Loved the automation? → AZ-400
• 🏛️ Loved the design decisions? → AZ-305, after more experience
• 🌐 Loved the networking? → AZ-700

Step 6: 🔄 Keep building. Certs expire. Skills don't.

Already certified? Your AZ-500 or AZ-204 stays valid, keep renewing it. Spend your energy on the delta: take AB-620 or AI-103 to add the agent layer on top of the foundation you already own.
